About 3 years ago, on the Vashon count, in the Port Orchard area,
I noticed a single bird at the edge vision, high in the sky. It was a
clear late afternoon day in an area I frequently found sapsuckers.
Expecting to see a Robin, blackbird, or starling I raised my glasses
and much to my surprise, it was a sapsucker. It was flying in large
circles, as I watched for over 5 minutes.
I puzzled over that behavior and think of it often. My only thoughts
were perhaps, simply an exercise flight or perhaps some type of winter
territorial flight.
