All the local reports of sapsuckers has had me vigilant for my own
sighting, and today I received my twisted reward: a recently road-
killed red-breasted sapsucker, in the street next to an overgrown
median in lower Phinney/upper Fremont. I moved it off the road and
returned from my short errand in hopes of collecting it or at least
examining its plumage more closely, but in that short time the crows
had gotten to it.

In the same neighborhood, both before and after the sapsucker
sighting, I twice saw a merlin fly over, the second time with crows
languidly in sort-of pursuit.

And near dusk (i.e. 4:30) at nearby Green Lake, a bald eagle with
prey crossed over many oblivious pedestrians less than 20 feet above
the ground. I could not tell whether it was carrying fish or fowl.
