we tried unshelled (I'm defining "shelled" as with shells)

My Mom is 91 and she would argue with you about that. She always referred to the pecans that were ready to put into?a pie as being "shelled." When I was growing up,?the entire family would?sit around the kitchen table on crisp fall evenings?and "shell" pecans. That is, we would remove the shells. I'll have to give her a call.

Nouns, verbs, adjectives! Don't you?just love the?twists and turns of?language?

?It's another variation on the old....shell game!
