We almost always have a pair of GH Owls nesting in the yard. We have never
put up a platform, but I know someone else who has one. His platform is
always used. It is waaay up in a tree. I'm not sure how he got it up so
high. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I think it's about 20 or 30
feet up. He made sure he located it so he could see the platform from his
kitchen window. It's in a tree on ground that slopes down from his house, so
he can see on top of the platform. His platform is just a piece of
reinforced plywood. Someone else on this list (sorry, forget who) used an
old satellite dish (or something of that shape about 2 feet in diameter)
with holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.



Surrounding habitat is probably the most important factor in getting them to
use the platform. Our owls are usually forced to use substandard nests,
like old magpie nests, which are a bit small and low to be considered
upscale GH Owl .properties, but they apparently like the habitat enough to
make do. (Patch of trees in the middle of open fields.)

Has anyone had any good luck or know of any good luck with making a nesting
box or platform for Great Horned Owls? If the GHO will accept and use one,
I'll head out into the garage for some winter birding projects. I think
they have not quite started nesting yet with our all our snow still on the
ground.
