Subject: [Tweeters] ultrasonic hearing in birds?

Robin and Tweeters,

Most birds cannot hear sounds in the ultrasonic range (above 20 kilohertz).
Of species that have been tested, only a very few (e.g. Chaffinches) can
hear even the lowest-frequency ultrasonic sounds.

I'm not sure how effective ultrasonic devices are in reducing barking dogs,
especially if they are in the next yard. One description of such a device
that I read said that it should be placed within 10 feet of the problem dog.
I worked for 12 years in the pest control industry, and in general, I would
say that ultrasonic devices are far less effective than they are claimed to
be.

At any rate, you need not worry about such a device bothering birds-- they
won't be able to hear it.

Hello all,

I'm wondering if anyone has used ultrasonic bark deterrents (for dogs)
around birds? I would like to get one to deter our neighbors' dogs from
incessant barking, but want to make sure it is not going to deter birds (or
bats?) from the area. There are a couple of large trees on the border of the
properties that are heavily used and contain a couple of nests.

Thanks very much,

Robin
