I have to add my story about Peregrine adaptation.
Last Spring here in Tucson we had a Peregrine take up
residence on a nearby phone pole and dine on mostly
bats. I first noticed the Peregrine eating a bat on
the phone pole. Next I saw it pick one out of the air
at dawn close to my porch. Bat's are defenseless from
behind: sonar is only forward looking. This Peregrine
was not just randomly trolling with open claws through
a cloud of bats, which I've seen many raptors do at
Carlsbad, Reno and around our Tucson bat colonies. It
was selecting and chasing individual bats. I watched
this bat hunt every morning and evening for a week. A
pile of bat wings built up below his favorite phone
pole dining table.
