I heard from Lee Johnson of Wauconda this morning about his recent sightings of White-winged Crossbills. Yesterday morning he saw twenty near his home, and this morning there were at least fifty. They are feeding on the cones of spruce and Douglas fir, and also come down to the road for grit. Wauconda is on the state highway between Republic and Tonasket, and this is several miles north of there, along Bunch Rd. Bunch heads northwest from Toroda Creek Rd, and the crossbills were seen both mornings over a mile and a half in, between the group of mailboxes and the end of the plowed county road. The land on both sides of the road is private. Siskins are also enjoying themselves in good numbers.
