Subject: [Tweeters] Red-Breasted Sapsuckers Being Cute

Snoqualmie Valley Trail between Carnation and Duvall always seems to be a good place to see Red-Breasted Sapsuckers. On Monday, we came across two that were foraging separately. When one approached the other, the approachee went on the alert and moved away a little at a time (little sounds accompanied this). There were a few more movements that seemed like aggression and retreat, but then they both paused and extended their beaks toward each other until they almost touched--this involved some neck-stretching. They both seemed to relax then and continued foraging closely together. I don't know what that was all about, but it was fun to watch.
