This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Rare Bird Alert for
Saturday, February 16th, sponsored in part by Wild Birds Unlimited,
with stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver. This message was updated
at 8 PM on February 16th. The RBA telephone number is (604) 737-3074.

Out of town RARE BIRD ALERT for an adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK at the
west end of Valley Road, just E of La Conner, WA (SW of Mount Vernon).
This bird has been seen regularly there since February 9. This species
has never been seen in BC, but the bird is only about an hour's drive
south from the Blaine border crossing.


Sightings for Saturday, February 16th:

The NORTHERN GOSHAWK continues around the pond at Jericho Park
in Vancouver and is being reported daily.

1 imm. GLAUCOUS GULL was in a gull flock on 36th Ave between 72nd St
and 64th St and the grey phase GYRFALCON was on the tower near the
Mansion west of 96th St, Delta. Also, the PRAIRIE FALCON was seen
along 36th Avenue west of 72nd Street in Delta.

At Lighthouse Marine Park, Point Roberts, Washington, a BRANDT'S
CORMORANT, 2 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, 2 PIGEON GUILLEMOTS and 25 COMMON
MURRES were observed.


No reports for Friday, February 15th


Sightings for Thursday, February 14th

Four BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS were seen at the Reifel Bird
Sanctuary in Delta, and 2 MUTE SWANS were at the nearby
Westham Island bridge.

The NORTHERN GOSHAWK was seen again in Jericho Park, Vancouver


Sightings for Wednesday, February 13th:

An EARED GREBE was seen from the White Rock pier in White Rock. A
HUTTON'S VIREO was at Crescent Park in Surrey.


No reports for Tuesday, February 12th


Sightings for Monday, February 11th:

12 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were seen along 72nd St between Hwy 10 and the
"cow tunnel" under Hwy 99 in Delta.


Sightings for Sunday, February 10th:

The PRAIRIE FALCON was again seen along 72nd St in Delta


Sightings for Saturday, February 9th:

One observer had a five falcon day in Delta between 2pm and 4pm: The
PRAIRIE FALCON was at the foot of 72nd St along with a PEREGRINE
FALCON, another PEREGRINE FALCON was at the foot of 96th St, The
gray phase GYRFALCON was along 112th St just north of the Railway
tracks and south Hwy 10, a male AMERICAN KESTREL was on 41B St just
north of Deltaport Way, and a MERLIN was on Westham Island.


No reports for Friday, February 8th


Sightings for Thursday, February 7th:

A possible ARCTIC LOON was seen near the second shelter on the Iona
South Jetty; confirmation of this sighting would appreciated.

Out of town, an ARCTIC LOON was reported from the peninsula on the
north side of Drayton Harbour along Marine Dr in Blaine, Washington.

Sightings for Wednesday, February 6th:

A TOWNSEND'S WARBLER is coming to a feeder on Spuraway Ave in Port
Coquitlam.


Sightings for Tuesday, February 5th:

An adult ICELAND GULL was at the Sardis Pond in Chilliwack, 110 km
E of Vancouver. It has been seen here daily since the February 2.


Sightings for Monday, February 4th:

Today was the last report for the imm. RUSTY BLACKBIRD at the pond at
Ambleside Park in West Vancouver.
