Greetings,

Yesterday, on my way home from a weekend of birding with Steve Mlodinow, Doug and Barbara Schonewald, and Brad Waggoner, I made a couple stops in Cowlitz Co. I know that there is ongoing effort to compile all species seen in each county annually, so I thought I would pitch in a few. I spent a little time along the Columbia R. at the Port of Kalama and then birded the Dike Access Rd. loop around the bottomlands n.w. of Woodland. Here are birds of modest interest that I found.

Port of Kalama
Greater Scaup -- two large flocks totalling nearly 2000 individuals one seen from the Port of Kalama offices and the other seen from I-5 just n. of Kalama.
Western Gull -- one adult

Dike Access Rd.-- I followed along the river checking several overlooks and also scope the fields from the dike

Greater Scaup -- 275
Lesser Scaup -- 8
Common Goldeneye --22
Red-throated Loon -- 1 at the mouth of Lewis River
Western Grebe -- 62
Horned Grebe -- 6
Sandhill Crane -- several flocks totalling about 350 birds
Mew Gull -- 1100 mostly roosting on sandbars and island beaches
Herring Gull -- 8
Thayer's Gull -- 6
Glaucous-winged Gull -- 18
Glaucous-winged X Western Gulls 7

The fields in the middle of the Dike Access Rd. loop were loaded with raptors, including 22 Red-tailed Hawks, 2 Rough-legged Hawks, 22 Northern Harriers and 12 American Kestrals.
