Hi Marilyn Marynick,

Like someone mentioned, it could have been BARN SWALLOWS that you saw (in reference to your first question). We do have CLIFF SWALLOWS up here as well but BARN SWALLOWS build the open cup nest and have orange undersides with forked tails and a blue back.

Second question one would need a little more information. In Japan they do have BARN SWALLOWS as well but their version is the EURASIAN SWALLOW which is identical except the belly is pure white and not orange like the American BARN SWALLOWS. The NORTHERN HOUSE MARTIN and possibly the NEPAL HOUSE MARTIN might range in Japan as well, that I am not 100% sure.
