Last night, I ran into Mike Fleming and Matt Bartels
and we spent a pleasant afternoon scanning for Gulls
off the mouth of the Cedar River, and from Coulon
Park.
No sign of the Slaty-backed, though we tried to make
many of the Western gulls into it!
But Mike and Matt had an immature Glaucous Gull from
the mouth of the Cedar, shortly before I arrived. And
we later found an adult Glaucous gull from Coulon
Park, among the hordes around the log booms.
I REALLY need to review the white-winged gulls,
because this one really looked small, and the bill
looked small to me. But I admittedly have limited
experience with them. So if anyone else spots this
adult, please let me know what field marks are needed
to seperate a Glaucous from an Iceland.
This bird was almost pure white. No visible smudging
on the head, pure white wing-tips, and a very pale
mantle. Beautiful gull!
