Hi Tweets,

Randy Hill and I again made the trip up to the Grand Coulee area. This time
in search of the Northern Hawk-Owl reported yesterday.

We figured as long as we were there we might as well try for the
Black-headed Gull for 2008.

After a bit of searching the Northern Hawk-Owl flew from somewhere (who
knows where since we initially could not find him) right over our vehicle
and landed on a power pole. We had great views of the bird as he moved from
place to place catching mice and voles and having breakfast.

After 1/2-hour or so of viewing the owl we went in search of the
Black-headed Gull (BHGU). The bird was again found on the booms above the
Grand Coulee Dam, but eventually flew to parts unknown. We ran into Mike and
MerryLynn Denny and, since the BHGU had departed, we took them to the NHOW.
Again we had great views.

We then went to look for the BHGU which Mike and MerryLynn found on the
booms. The bird flew again and ended up at the log booms at Coulee Playland
in Electric City.

The Electric City log booms also sported a 2w Glaucous Gull among the other
suspects.

An adult columbarius Merlin flew across the road and landed in a tree as we
left Electric City, a fitting goodbye.

On the way to Grand Coulee in the morning Randy and I also had the fortune
to spot a Long-tailed Duck at the north end of Soap Lake.

As Marv is wont to say, "It was a good day".
A nice start to 2008

Cheers
