Hi All: On the Vashon/Maury CBC 30 Dec, which includes part of Kitsap Co, my team counted along the shore from Southworth to Colby. At the Harper Pier we were scoping and counted a few Pacific and red-throated loons. The Pacifics took off as did some gulls and headed east toward a feeding flock of gulls forming about .5 mi to the east. Scoping to the north there was a continuous stream of loons, mostly Pacifics, plus Brandt's and DC Cormorants and gulls, heading into the swirling mass of gulls (counts were not precise at this point, but swirling mass = 300+ for CBC quantification). Eagles were joining the flock from Blake and Vashon Islands and from the Kitsap side. At the peak numbers, eight eagles were swooping and swirling with the gulls and appeared to be picking fish from the water. They were ignored by the other members of the feeding flock. We didn't see what the birds were going for and did not see feeding sea lions or whales that might attract birds. At the peak the flock looked the snow in a huge snow globe and was one of the more impressive feeding flocks I've seen. The flock dispersed after 15 mins. The official tally for my sector was 117 Pacific and 45 red-throated loons. Usually we have fewer than 20 of each.
