At about 4:30 this afternoon, in northern Clallam County WA, about two miles west of Port Angeles, while driving east back to town from Lake Crescent, I saw the largest flight of (presumably roosting) crows that I've ever seen around here (in about 40 years of birding), swirling high over the roadway en masse southward toward the foothills of the Olympic Mountains. I was in enough traffic that I couldn't stop or slow down a lot, but was able to do a couple of quick patch-count scans well enough through the grouping to come up with a minimum of around 1500 birds, and likely a good many more. Daily movements of several hundred crows are common here toward the foothills in the late afternoon or early evening like this, but an aggregation of this size is a good deal larger than I've ever heard of or seen for myself here. Anyone knowing otherwise, please let me know. It also clarified a bit better for me finally, that there are probably at least a couple thousand or more crows residing around here at this time of year.
