One of my roommates and I went up the Snow Lake Trail above Alpental today to do some snowshoeing. Turned out to be a perfect day up there - cold and sunny until around 2:00pm when it finally started snowing. The lovely weather allowed for a few good bird sightings, even though we had our other roommates husy/malamute mix puppy with us. Best birds were about a dozen Gray-crowned Rosy-finches with a flock of ~30 Pine Siskins. There was also a second flock of over 80 Pine Siskins that sat in a snag over our heads for a number of minutes making their little machine-gun che-che-che-cheer-che-che-cheer calls, and then their zipper sounds - with that many birds it was quite impressive. Other good birds were a small flock of Red Crossbills that flew over, a couple of groups of Gray Jays, and a mixed flock of both Chestnut-backed and Mountain Chickadees. Snowshoeing on a wonderful day like today with that many good birds about was a real winter treat!
