We would love your sightings for Western Bluebirds. Small flocks have been reported in Western Washington this winter (thanks for posting on Tweeters). The San Juan Islands Western Bluebird Reintroduction Project has placed colored leg bands on eight pair of birds translocated to San Juan Island during the 2007 breeding season. Each leg has a unique combination of two colored bands to assist in monitoring birds during this five-year study. Please note the color combination for each leg, date, and observed location. Photos would be great but can be hard to get. Send information to: Barbara Jensen, San Juan Islands Audubon Society, (360)378-3068 or skylark at rockisland.com.

One pair did breed on San Juan Island last year and produced three male chicks. All five birds were seen on the island well into September. We are beginning our efforts for the second year by building more boxes, giving presentations on Lopez, Orcas and San Juan Islands, recruiting volunteers and of course, excepting donations. Feel free to help us in any way, even making a box or two. We are using the plans found on the North American Bluebird Society website www.nabluebirdsociety.org We will be translocating more birds from Ft. Lewis and hopefully seeing the one breeding pair from last season return to the sunny San Juans.
