On the face of it his seems a very odd statement since birds constantly
wear out and replace the "gravel" and other gritty material they use for
digestion. As I understand it, birds have a two-chambered stomach. The
first stomach puts digestive fluid on the food and the second grinds it
up. The chickadees around my feeders love to peck at peanuts. Once
they ingest the pieces they make "peanut butter" in their gizzards,
peanut butter being nothing but ground up peanuts. I'd treat this one
as another old wive's tale until proven otherwise.

Perhaps there is some sort of spin-off from the aflotoxin problem which
is especially associated with raw peanuts.
