Owls should be hooting like crazy and mating about
now. In many California locations they also come out
in the open during cloudy days.

There are also winter owl roosts. We have a roost
near Tucson with 40+ Barn Owls, 2+ Long-eared Owls and
2+ Great Horned Owls, all in a 2 acre willow forest.
They are easily visble all day.

I don't know how far north such roosts exist ( N. Cal
for sure), but they are worth watching for.
