Hi Richard,
Those may have been Rock Pigeons as you first suspected. When I worked in
Kent I often noticed the pigeons which lived under a nearby bridge fly in that
manner for at least 5 minutes around dusk. I was thinking this was just a winter
phenomenon, but maybe I wasn't there to see it in the spring/summer when
dusk comes later.
I wonder if it is something they do to warm up before roosting for the night?
Maybe its a way of displaying to wayward pigeons where roosts are?
Any pigeon fanciers out there have any thoughts on this?
