Robert, et.al,

I would think this behavior is pretty typical of foraging species everywhere. If the food supply is abundent, they don't mind the company. If the food is scarce you may see more agression and territorial behavior. It's January, so I'm sure the Flickers aren't thinking about anything but food at the present.

Any other thoughts out there?

Don't know how unusual this is but at this very moment there's no less
than 5 Flickers "lounging" about in the upper branches of my Big Leaf
Maple. Three males, one female and one unknown (refuses to reveal
enough of itself for a good gender check). They're not uncommon around
here, but can't say I've seen five together before.
