Rolan and all Tweeters,

I would think this behavior is pretty typical of foraging species everywhere. If the food supply is abundant, they don't mind the company. If the food is scarce you may see more aggression and territorial behavior. It's January, so I'm sure the Flickers aren't thinking about anything but food at the present.

Any other thoughts out there?

I think that there must be some bug or grub that just hatched or whatever. My lawn and the park I usually bird in have been FULL of Flickers, Robins, Crows and starlings probing around in the grass and dirt.
The flickers in my neighborhood are beginning to think of other things I have observed several displays of their FLICCA-FLICCA-FLICCA dance.
