I haven't had the chance to do any 'real' birding for a long time because a toddler doesn't know how to be birder-quiet. Now that he's four and a half he's finally able and willing to do so, so today we went to Carkeek Park in Seattle.
As we went up the North Bluff Trail I came to realize we were surrounded by a wonderful abundance of birds. I had no binoculars or books, but soon saw a flock of Ruby Crowned Kinglets, Bushtits, Chestnut-Backed and Black-Capped Chickadees and at least one other little (a bit bigger than the Kinglets) grayish bird I couldn't ID. Then we saw a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers working a tree not thirty feet away for maybe ten minutes and at least two Flickers (red) as I heard, I think, one or more Downy Woodpeckers across the 'valley'. Then we turned around and were priveleged to see three Bald Eagles (Ma, Pa, and last year's kid, I think) fly by at eye level! I believe they roost somewhere along the bluff edge.
Add the Common Goldeneyes, White-Winged Scoters and Horned Grebe offshore, and it was a very satisfying day indeed! My little guy may yet grow up to be a birder...
