Tweets,

Yesterday 7 of us enjoyed a very pleasant walk at Nisqually. It was cool
but sunny and not much wind...and the birds cooperated.

Highlights included 6 EURASIAN WIGEON and a pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS.

There is still plenty of water in the ponds and there were lots of waterfowl
about. We saw our first male EURASIAN WIGEON in the pond on the right at
the start of the walk to McAllister Creek. Next we saw another 2 males in a
flock of about 30 or so AMERICAN WIGEON on the pond just before McAllister
Creek. The last four EURASIAN WIGEON we saw were from the boardwalk on the way
to the twin barns. We figured the first one we saw was one of these four
since it was the same general area.

There were several COMMON MERGANSERS and COMMON GOLDENEYE on the Nisqually
River.

We saw the pair of GREAT HORNED OWLS in the riparian area along the
Nisqually River near survey stake #392. One bird was fairly exposed on a branch to
the left of the tree trunk and the other bird was better hidden about 6 feet
above the first bird.

All told we saw 52 species and we now have 59 species for the year. The
dike trail opens on January 28 so our species count should go up them.

Mammals seen were EASTERN GRAY SQUIRREL and HARBOR SEAL in the Nisqually
River.

Until next week.....
