According to the Washington Breeding Birds Phenology Project (see
http://www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/collections/ornithology/phenology/index.php):

Hooded merganser: 5 records, the earliest date of first egg laid is February
25, the latest date of the first egg laid is April 29.

Wood Duck: 89 records, earliest date of first egg laid is March 14, the
latest is June 19. Looks like the month of April is the peak.

I'd suggest you go ahead and put them up.

Sorry for the delayed report, we had a female black-headed grosbeak at our
feeder off South Bay Road, Olympia, on Wednesday the 16th. The first one
I've seen here in winter.

A question, how early might hooded mergansers or wood ducks start breeding?
Planning on putting up a box at a pond nearby and wondering if I need to get
it up soon?
