Bruce,

Could you post this to Tweeters for me? Thanks, Bill

Promising gull location on Lake Rufus Woods

On Tuesday, Jan 15, I paid a quick visit to the net pens on Lake Rufus Woods, west of the Nespelem Creek mouth. Among 20+ gulls I saw in a few minutes were 3 1YR Glaucous Gulls, 1 1YR Glaucous-winged Gull and at least 1 1YR Thayer's Gull, as well as several Herring and only a couple of Ring-bills. The composition was unusual both because of the diversity, and also the age structure as almost half of the gulls were 1YR. Adults predominate in winter at most interior locations. For those birding in the Grand Coulee area, this location is less than a half hour from there. It is reached off Hwy 155. Turn west at Colville Indian Agency (about a mile south of Nespelem) onto an unmarked paved road that follows Nespelem Creek and then runs west along the north shore of Lake Rufus Woods, which is the impounded section of the Columbia River behind Chief Joseph Dam. The main net pen complex is located in Section 31, R 30 E, T 31 N.
