Yesterday, Josh Parrott, Dick Abbott and I paid a
visit to Rosario Head (Skagit County side of Deception
Pass. There were lots of Red-throated Loons, a few
Commons, and one Pacific.

As the light was fading, another loon showed up. It
kept diving just as I would get the scope focussed on
it. However, even with binoculars only, the most
obvious feature on the bird was a big pale patch on
the rear flanks. None of the RTLO had such a patch,
and of course, neither did the PALO.

The overall color of the unidentified loon seemed to
match that of an Arctic Loon. It was a light brownish
color, similar to that which I was able to observe on
the Point No Point bird last year.

We saw this loon from the promontory that commands
views of the pass; it may have escaped our searching
by joining a large number of RTLO that were fishing in
the currents of the pass.

Also of note yesterday was a large flock of sandpipers
at March Point. This was in the southeast corner of
Fidalgo Bay. There were close to a hundred each of
Dunlin and Least Sandpiper, as well as two or more
Western Sandpiper.
