Hi Tweets,

My wife and I visited family back in Iowa last week. I had hoped to spend a
lot of time outside photographing Northern Cardinals, Blue Jays and other
local birds, but between a terrible chest cold and temperatures that ranged
between 8 and -9 degrees F, I ended up mostly watching birds through a
window. I did get to see some old favorites though. The cardinals and jays
did make an appearance, and I saw Red-bellied Woodpeckers on multiple
occasions. I was able to get out to a local park for a short trip and came
across a White-breasted Nuthatch that was busy trying to find a place to
cache a shelled sunflower seed. I assume he picked up the seed at a feeder
in a yard near the park. He seemed very particular about where he was going
to hide it, and he tried out several different spots before settling on a
loose piece of bark in the crook of a tree. It was quite entertaining to
watch, at least until I started losing feeling in my fingers and toes.

Photos of the nuthatch can be found in my Passerines gallery here:
