Diane Yorgason-Quinn suggests that eastern goldfinches are smarter than western because--according to photos in eastern-produced catalogs--eastern birds are seen at feeders our goldfinches can't figure out. Possibly. Then again, it may be that catalog producers have just recognized the page appeal of the goldfinch and with the magic of Photoshop have risen above the principle of authenticity.
