I promised this a month ago. Been waiting on Washington Department of
Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).

Map to follow.

Effort to check them all out this spring will follow that in April and
May.

Check to see if there is a roost near you.

Issaquah

Vaux?s Swift known migration roost sites
in Washington State

Whatcom County

Ferndale

1. Brick Chimneys at Hovander County Park. There are at least three
brick chimneys on the property. Information from Paul Woodcock of
Bellingham Audubon.

Sumas

2. Old Customs building. Saved in the 1970s. There has been no
organized effort at monitoring this site. Information from Sumas
Chamber of Comerce and Ann Eissinger, professional wildlife biologist
and owner of Nahkeeta Northwest.

Bellingham

3. The historic Roeder Home at the end of Sunset Drive is on the
National Historic Register. Pall Woodcock has no population figures.



Okanogan County

Twisp

4. Merc Playhouse. Spring sightings. I believe there are other
chimneys in the neighborhood that are also used. Information provided
by Libby Schreiner and Kent Woodruff of the Forest Service.



Skagit County

Sedro-Woolley (4 sites)

5. The huge down town brick chimney had a thousand VASW around ten
years ago reports Dave Swayne.

6. The former site of Skagit Steel attracted the attention of Gary
Bletsch who casually observed 25 VASW on 9/11/94 and 50 on 9/18/94.

7. Old Northern State Hospital grounds, which are north of Sedro-
Woolley and east of hwy 9, has been used within the past two years.
Steve Miodinow may have made an observation here.

8. WDFG info. On 5/5/92 an unknown number of Vaux?s Swifts flew into
the chimney of Countryside Chevrolet.



Chelan County

Entiat

9. Residential Chimney had 50 birds in 2006. Sighting by Rick Taylor.



Snohomish County

Arlington

10. WDFG info. 5/30/91 1500 birds went into the chimney of two a
story building in downtown Arlington.

Monroe

11. Wagoner Elementary School. Thousands in September have been
making a well-known public spectacle of themselves.

12. Monroe Swifts have also used the "Old Governing building" across
town according to Walter English. They may also the chimney of the
current administration building.



Clallam County

Sequim

13. The Dungeness Hatchery in Sequim had roosting Swifts ten years
ago. Report by Hal Michael.



King County

Seattle (3 sites)

14. In Lakewood, Catherine Alexander reports that a nest and perhaps
roost site has been recently capped.

15. From Genesee Park?Here is a ?Swift Night Out? report: ?Vaux's
Swifts, 2-300 at Genesee Park in the Seward Park neighborhood of south
Seattle, 2 blocks west of Lake Washington on 9/13/03 at 7:30PM?

16. In the Broadmore near Arboretum, Mike Donahue reports that a
homeowner capped her chimney to keep out the bats or whatever.



Enumclaw

17. Chalet Theatre. Information from Penny Koyama and this ?Swift
Night Out? report. ?Two of us did a Vaux's Swift count last night. We
are Master Birders, and are in Rainier Audubon Society in WA.

Location - Chalet Movie Theater, 1721 Wells St, Enumclaw, WA

Description - older movie theater w/ brick chimney approx. 30 ft high
by 2X2 ft square. The movie theater still is operating.

Weather - 58 degrees, light rain, no wind?



STEVENS COUNTY

Colville

18. WDFW info. Several single digit sightings in the late 1990s. On
5/8/02, 50 swifts flew into a chimney in downtown Colville. On
5/8/03, 78 swifts flew into a building?s chimney at Main Street and
the Ist Ave alley. (Same building?)



GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY

Colonel Bob Wilderness ? Classon Creek

19. WDFG info. On 5/1/88 100 plus Vaux?s Swifts entered a large
broken off Douglas Fir. This living 100-foot tree is located at
123.73949417 and 47.39628151.



Thurston County

Olympia

20. In the neighborhood of 205 18th Ave there have been 500 or so
roosting individuals. They will use different chimneys. Sarah Coven
reports that there is a lot of chimney capping going on. Kristin
Stewart believes Gary Wiles may know of an additional Olympia site.

21. WDFW info. 5/18/94 30-49 Swifts into a chimney at 1712 Capital
Way for 2 consecutive nights, reported by Nikki McClure



Tenino

22. At the corner of Hwy 507 and Sage Street is the small chimney of
an auto repair shop. Bob Sundstrum reports 200 to 250 roosting Swifts
here in 2005.



Lewis County

Centralia

23. WA Fish and Wildlife Biologist Lori Salzer observed 100s of VAUX?S
going in to roost last fall near the Olympic Club in downtown Centralia.



Kittitas County

Ellensburg

24. The old hospital at 3rd Avenue at Popular Street. On Sept. 4,
2007, 7:30 to 7:50 PM, several hundred Vaux?s counted by Phil Mattocks.



Yakima County

Yakima

25. South of Yakima there is a residence that has hosted up to 200
individuals the last 6 to 8 years. Information comes from Fred
Erickson and Denny Granstrand.



Wahkiakum County

Cathlamet

26. WDFW info. On 5/30/97 Approximately 200 Vaux?s went into the
chimney of the historic Johnson House at the NW corner of 2nd and
Spring.



Clark County

Camas

27. In several old buildings in the neighborhood of 4th and Adams
there have been100s sighted by Wilson Cady.



Klickitat County
Klickitat.

28. The remains of an old bottling plant in the Klickitat Wildlife
area has traditionally hosted 100s of VASW according to WAFW. In 2006
Wilson Cady observed 1000s.
