Subject: [Tweeters] call id

Hoping someone can help me out with an call id.
I was in the Okanogan area (Lake Lyman) and at dusk we heard calls we
couldn't figure out.
It was loud and deep and sounded like a combo honk/bray. It lasted approx a
second and seemed to be call and response. At any rate there was more than
one.
At first we thought it was a mammal but realized it was coming from the
trees.
Current theories are:
some sort of tree frog/toad or
nighthawks creating their "booming" display by vibrating primaries (although
instinctively it sounded like it comes from a throat). There were many
nighthawks feeding at that time.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
