Subject: [Tweeters] Osprey nests on cell phone towers along I-5 and I-405

There is a Wa State Partol office in Eastgate, just north of I-90
at 156th St in Bellevue.  Last Sunday my wife & I did a little
birding in the area.  There is an "active" Osprey nest on the
WSP radio tower.  A juvenile was sitting below the nest on one
of the crossbars.  One of the parents gave him/her something to
eat.  He/she sat there for over two hours.  My wife works
in the area and is "teaching" a birding class to her fellow
workers.  Kind of a fun-day, intro to birding thing.

By the way, just east of the WSP office is a large open
field.  There are paved paths through the area.  I think I
saw a Savannah Sparrow on a fence post on the south side of the
field.  I didn't get a great look at it, but nothing else in the
book appeared to be right.  It was a small sparrow with yellow on
the head.

Is anyone else familiar with that area?  Have you seen a
Savannah Sparrow in the area?

Quoting Tim O'Brien :

I've been doing a lot of commuting in the past few weeks to the
Seattle area and back. I have noticed two Osprey nests along the
major interstates on cell phone towers. The first is in Pierce
County near Lakewood on I-5. And the other is along I-405 in King
County near Renton. I know of another nest on a cell phone tower in
Ocean Shores as well. I wonder if these will help proliferate the
species as they continue to pop up everywhere. Then again it makes
you wonder if there may be some kind of bad side effect to being
exposed to whatever radio waves those towers receive and emit.
Probably a good research paper subject!
