Down at the Lakewood Marina on Thursday afternoon I watched as an adult Barn Swallow attempted to feed a huge dragonfly (Whitetail?) to one of its offspring. The juvie did the proper gaping and fluffing when the adult approached but closed its mouth and turned away three times as the adult attempted to stuff the dragonfly into its mouth. The fourth time, the kid literally turned its back on the offering and scuttled off into a corner, cheeping all the way, whereupon it sat, head in the corner until the adult went away. Perhaps the dragonfly was too big; perhaps the kid just doesn't like dragonfly.
Today I was playing music on the south stage at the West Seattle Street Fair when I noticed a Northern Harrier swooping over California Ave and scattering Rock Doves in every direction. I was enthralled.
