I recently got the book: "The Horse, the Wheel, and Language", by D.W. Anthony, and it is packed with lots of interesting tidbits. My point is that the Proto-Indo-European homeland was the Pontic-Caspian Grass Steppes, before the various branches of Indo-European languages radiated out from there. There is references to the mammals, palnts, and even honey bees, but I don't recall birds, except maybe cranes, being mentioned.
