Subject: [Tweeters] Pileated Woodpecker w.Young today

On July 21, a male Pileated brought a single young (pale pinkish-red
puffy crest) bird, probably a female (no red on face) into our yard
twice, fed copiously from the suet cake (very awkwardly as the suet
is hanging down from a stand) and then fed the young that was parked
on a nearby tree. I got a few photos of the two of them together. I
saw it come in with the young bird twice over a period of a few
hours, then it came in a third time by itself but filled up again and
presumably flew back to where it had left the young. That was the
only day this happened. I hadn't heard a Pileated for some time and
didn't know there was one around, although I have always thought they
bred in the wooded ravine behind our house. Perhaps they moved
farther away after this session with our suet.
