Tweets,

George Gerdts and I surveyed the shorebirds at Port Susan Bay Preserve
yesterday mid-day. The Preserve is a Nature Conservancy property at the
mouth of the Stillguamish River just south of Stanwood. To minimize
disturbance one should contact Kat Morgan at kmorgan at tnc.org
<mailto:kmorgan at tnc.org?subject=Information%20on%20Port%20Susan%20Bay> or
(360) 419-7059 for permission to visit.

We were following up on Steve Mlodinow's earlier post about a large number
of early returning, adult Pectoral Sandpipers. We scanned from the west on
the dike as the tide was coming in. We noted eleven species of shorebirds,
including a number of juveniles. Numbers are approximate and from memory.

Semipalmated Plover, 4 adults

Killdeer, 4

Greater Yellowlegs, 15 adults, no juveniles

Lesser Yellowlegs, at least one adult and at least one juvenile

Semipalmated Sandpiper, one juvenile

Western Sandpiper, about 25 adults, five juveniles

Least Sandpiper, about 50 adults, no juveniles

Pectoral Sandpiper, at least 10 adults, at least two juveniles

Stilt Sandpiper, one adult molting into basic plumage

Long-billed Dowitcher, 60 adults, no juveniles, in various early stages of
molt out of alternate

Wilson's Phalarope, ten juveniles (they apparently nested here this year).

What appeared to be a juvenile Peale's Peregrine periodically disturbed the
peace but was not successful in catching anything during our visit.
