At Allyn, WA (Mason Co) on the power towers in the bay, there has
traditionally been a "colony" of two Osprey nests, one on each set of
towers. The eastern tower had its usual occupied nest this year, but on the
westernmost set of towers (Allyn side), I was surprised to see several Great
Blue Heron nests on top (though they have sometimes built nests on the lower
rungs). Even more surprising was to see an Osprey peaking out of one of the
middle nests! This Osprey nest was actually touching a Heron nest on at
least one side, maybe both sides, though the angle made it difficult to say.
I have never seen this before. All nests had birds in them a couple of
weeks ago. The Herons seem to fledge a little later than usual when they've
had to build new nests from scratch, which was the case here.
