Tweeters and Whatcom Birders,

Late yesterday (June 2), I spent a couple of hours poking around Lake
Terrell and Cherry Point, west of Ferndale.

The Wild (?) Turkey-- presumably the same one I saw on April 16th-- was
feeding along Gulf Road not far from the beach at Cherry Point. It wasn't
very wild, as you can tell from the photo on my Flickr page at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/wcweber . I guess that before long, Whatcom
County will be overrun with Wild Turkeys, Eurasian Collared-Doves, and even
more non-native species that aren't established here yet...

I saw BULLOCK'S ORIOLES at both localities-- one singing from a big
cottonwood at the entrance to the Lake Terrell Wildlife Area, and at least 3
in the Cherry Point area (foot of Gulf Road). This seems like a good showing
for a bird which is fairly scarce in the county.

Also of interest was a breeding-plumage COMMON LOON on the far side of Lake
Terrell (plus two more off the beach at Cherry Point). This is one of the
few lakes in the entire state of Washington where loons have nested in
recent years, although I'm not sure if they have nested successfully there
in the last decade.

The WILLOW FLYCATCHERS are finally back-- there were at least 2 at the
Cherry Point marsh.
