Hi all,
This is my first post (as I've just joined yesterday) so please excuse me if I've done anything wrong.
I feed our birds all year (less in warmer months) and always seem to have new ones joining on a regular basis. I tossed our hummer feeders out on St. Patty's day (and that very day saw my first taker!) Since then (and I'm very new to bird watching) I've got probably 10 or more that fight over them (4 around each side of the house) they are mostly rufous(?) and Allens females but today is the first time I've gotten the bright red kind (Allen male?) who seems to be the most dominant of all. We've got the purple house finch, some evening grossbeaks (orange/black and white) had a western tanager about a week ago, to join with the robins, starlings, junco's, nuthatches and chicadees. Most recently we've attracted some cowbirds (I think we have both male and female as one type is black with brown head and the other is sable solid) which have such a wonderful call! Also (and these guys make us laugh as they're so clumsy) Band-tailed pigeons. At first it was only two, then they left for a few days, came back with a few friends, and continued to do that until today we've counted 11 at once under our feeders. Our crowd was so fun today: All pigeons under the feeder, on it, in the trees watching, a couple junco's, two grossbeaks (also another with cream/black markings...it's beautful, like an indian drawing...anyone know if this is a female grossbeak?) the chicadees, cowbirds in the tree watching and two chipmunks munching among the pigeons! Meanwhile our hummers are dancing around eachother closer to the house. It's very interesting here! I would love to get some pictures of the bandtail pigeons all eating together but they're very skittish. I'm also going to try to get some pictures of our grossbeaks (and that one I can't figure out what it is).
I've had a great time looking through the website and am glad to have found it!
