Still have plenty of purple finches here on the Kitsap Peninsula down near Tahuya. Besides the ones at my feeders I saw several others on my birding route this morning. Along North Shore Rd near Dewatto Rd a pair of Purple finches were tearing apart the seed balls of a cottonwood tree to get at the fluff inside. Whether it was to eat the tiny seeds or to gather the fluff I'm not sure. I didn't seem them fly off with the fluff.

At Menard's Landing park a pair of Cedar Waxwings were gathering dry marine algae from the branches of a dead evergreen lying into what had been water before the tide went out this morning (minus 4.6 in Tahuya). They were particular to gather only the dry algae before flying off to a tree where I presume they are nesting.

Saw several bald eagles standing thigh high on the newly exposed expanses of sea lettuce or whatever the green slippery stuff was out on the rocks. Not sure if the eagles were looking for food or trying to figure out what happened to all the water.
