In May, we had Robins nesting under our deck, VG Swallows in the box they've used for years?and Juncos on TOP of a second, unused nest box. These are all under the same deck.?The Robin fledglings were attacked by?Crows and?killed, the?Swallows started a nest but?abandoned it halfway through, and the Junco nest was found on the ground with only the trace of an egg.? The Juncos attempted another nest in my fushia basket but after laying 5 perfect little eggs, the nest was once again found destroyed on the ground.? I immediately thought Crows but then remembered seeing a Stellar Jay sitting on the gutter directly above the nest the day before.? At that point, I thought we were nest-less and?so I?gave my husband the okay to clean the deck, which he did today.? Just now, while checking for?bleach damaged foliage, I see that?the industrious little Juncos have once again built on top of that same unused nestbox, under the deck which was flooded
with cleaning solution.? Unbelievably, a bird is still sitting on the nest.??There are some success stories however, fledged BC Chickadees, Nuthatches and House Finches,?all coming to the suet and sunflower seeds.? Haven't seen the Piliated, Hairy or Downy babies yet this year, hopefully soon.
