Dear Tweeters,

No great shakes, but a Red-breasted Nuthatch appeared in my yard near Lyman, Skagit County, yesterday--during my fiftieth birthday bash! Actually, more like a fiftieth birthday quiet little barbecue.

It astounds me that this species has taken so long to appear here. Although we are surrounded by hayfields, we have quite a few conifers, and there are mixed woodlands only 150 meters away.

When we lived in Concrete, our house bordered a mixed woodland that stretches all the way to Canada--and in seven years, we never saw a RBNU at all!

At our present house, where we have lived for about six years, all of the following species have showed up (or at least made themselves heard) at least once: American Bittern, Great Egret, Eurasian Wigeon, Golden Eagle, Rough-legged Hawk, Sora, Virginia Rail, Whimbrel, Northern Pygmy-Owl, Short-eared Owl, Calliope Hummingbird, Eastern and Western Kingbird, Say's Phoebe, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Western Wood-Pewee, Western Scrub-Jay, Townsend's Warbler, White-throated and Chipping Sparrow, Yellow-headed Blackbird, Red Crossbill, and Pine Grosbeak.

I would have guessed that the nuthatch would have made it here long before most of those other species!
