I saw this species while doing vegetation surveys at the Glacial Heritage
preserve in Thurston Co and hadn't figured it out yet. Here is a link to a

female Common Whitetail - Libellula lydia
Order Odonata / Suborder Anisoptera / Family Libellulidae -- common
skimmers,
(skimmers are in part distinguished by usually having flattened abdomens as
adults and as nymphs / niads as having shortened abdomens)

Hi Dawn The dragonfly is a female Common Whitetail (the male is
strikingly different ). The only reason I know this is because I have Dennis
Paulsons "Dragonflies of Washington" in front of me. It's a great little
book he wrote, available at Seattle Audubon, only about $7, and very small
and easy to carry around with you in the field.
Online you might check out the Slater Museum (Tacoma) webpage ( which
Dennis also put together) and go to the biodiversity pages where they have
'scans of western odonates' which are very useful and detailed images.
