I have had a group of 10-15 Red Crossbills in the Maplewood Heights area of the Renton Highlands for tha past couple of months. They seem to come and go though. I will see and hear them singing for almost a week straight and then nothing for a few days. The only pattern that I have noticed is the weather. When it gets warm and sunny they seem to dissapear. Perhaps to higher ground. When they are here, they sign non-stop; Of course from the very top of a conifer. My neighborhood is just off of NE 4th St (locally known as Cemetary Road) and Jericho (144th Ave) in the 98059 zip code.

I've asked you about Red Crossbills in the past as a favor to Tom Hahn (now at UC Davis), who regularly has students visit Washington to study them. Now I'm asking for Julie Smith (on the faculty at Pacific Lutheran University), another crossbill researcher. Julie would like to know if anyone has seen crossbills that were SINGING (not just calling or flying over) this spring/summer, and if so, where and when.
