Today 11 of us walked Nisqually under clear skies and warm weather. The
weather was great but the birding was spotty.

Highlights included a pair of BULLOCK'S ORIOLES in the riparian area near
the twin barns turn off and a couple of great looks at WARBLING VIREOS, one in
the riparian area at the end of the boardwalk near the Nisqually River
overlook and the other just inside the boardwalk near the parking lot.

Waterfowl were very scarce with only MALLARDS and CANADA GEESE being seen
today. They have started haying the fields in preparation for construction of
the new inner dike so raptors should come back soon.

We did see families of COMMON YELLOWTHROAT and BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEES and
saw lots of STARLINGS and BAND-TAILED PIGEONS. CEDAR WAXWINGS were common,
but not as numerous as in recent weeks.

All told we saw 40 species for the day.

Mammals seen included a buck BLACK-TAILED DEER in velvet and an EASTER GRAY
SQUIRREL at the picnic area near the twin barns.
