Hi Dennis and tweeters.

A timely note because I was just wondering about the Junco's in my yard here in urban north Everett this morning. I've been here at this place for seven years and have never seen any Junco's except in the November to early April time period, and not that many then either.

The last week I've noticed a pair of Junco's around the yard, and under the feeder. Today one was singing in the backyard ! While I've been skeptical that such ground nesters could make it breeding here in the cat/rat/grey squirrel infested urb,s, I think back 27 years ago to a breeding bird study I worked on near Tioga Pass in the California high sierra. The Junco's were the hardest nest's to find bar none. I've never dismissed them as being uninteresting birds since.

Hello, tweets.

I don't suppose many people would consider this a cosmic bird sighting, but it excited me.

A male Dark-eyed Junco was just at our feeder for a few minutes. Here it is June 26, and I have never seen a junco here in the summer in 17 years. My latest-ever spring date is May 5, earliest-ever fall date September 3. They breed here and there in Seattle, but not in my neighborhood.

Would birds be so interesting if they didn't fly?
