Around 0-dark-30 (0400 to be precise) the neighbor woke me as she headed off to work. After the crunch of car tires vanished I lay awake listening to night sounds. A couple of nighthawks were peenting not to far away and a lone killdeer wandered the local skies. At 0630 when I went out to feed the birds a common loon whistled its way overhead. I've been here 6 years now and never heard a loon at this time of year. It was headed SW toward a very isolated lake on the south end of the ridge. I've had reports of loons nesting there but haven't bush-whacked my way back in due to the excessive overgrowth of broom and other brush. Seems a strange time of year for loons around here.

The towhees are splashing about in their bath already this morning. They sure like the water.
