hi kerri:

you can make a relatively safe rodenticide yourself using peanut butter and
vitamin d3 (cholicalciferol). crush a vitamin d tablet with pliers and mix
the powder with peanut butter. i use a couple tablets to half a heaping
teaspoon of peanut butter and place it near a hole or on a runway. so far
it works great out here in the provinces.

see: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/epd/ipmp/publications/brochures/rats_mice.htmfor
more info:

Products containing cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3), however, present a lower
risk to other animals. This compound kills by a vitamin D overdose after 3-4
days, which mobilizes excessive amounts of calcium in the blood. It is the
least hazardous of the rodent poisons for domestic use and least risky to
other animals if they catch a poisoned rodent.
