While swimming in the Sound yesterday at Burfoot County Park, just north of Olympia, I observed a pair of pigeon guillemots apparently collecting nesting materials. I noticed them because one flew past me at just above surface level less than ten feet from where I was splashing. It was really a neat view, seeing the bright red feet so clearly without optics (including my glasses!). One thing of interest is that the guillemots are nesting in the cliffs about 20 ft above the beach where many people recreate in the summer. I was surprised to see them so close to so much human activity. Whenever I have seen guillemots nest in the past, they have been in colonies, not just one pair. Any thoughts, anyone?
