Nancy,

At the usual risk of being made a fool of I'll cast my vote for a Cooper's,
based on the distinctly raised hackles on the nape, the finely streaked
belly, and what appears to be a shorter outer tail feather hiding beneath
the folded tail, and also possibly the forward position of the eye, though
the angle makes that a bit hard to judge.

I'd love the help of anyone in the group so inclined to try and identify a
photo I took of either a juvenile Sharp-shinned or a Cooper's Hawk. The

I took this photo a few weeks ago on Fir Island at Hayden. What a beautiful
bird and so cooperative as I photographed it from my car. I couldn't
believe how close I was...and I didn't see it right away; I was pulling in
to see if there were any short-eared owls, then I glanced over and saw this
bird perched on the fence. Wow!
